There's been some really mixed weather over the last few weeks. The Siberian snow showers that are heading our way next week are the latest in this meteorological rollercoaster of a year. One thing that has remained consistent through-out this madness is a serving of our favourite singles once a week. This week, we're treating you to a touch of George the Poet with a smattering of Shakka. Enjoy!

Brooklyn Jones, ‘Follow the Leader’ by George the Poet and Maverick Sabre featuring Jorja Smith

I first discovered George the Poet at the Autism Uncut awards run by the National Autistic Society, receiving an award for his BBC1 documentary on his brother Kenny. Subsequently, I was pleasantly surprised to see his name on this latest track with Maverick Sabre and Jorja Smith. The track is well-done, well-produced to perfectly match the soulful and thoughtful tempo and sound of the artists. I hadn’t heard Maverick Sabre’s voice in a while but listening to his verse on this track brought back memories of listening to him on my little square iPod at 14. And Jorja Smith is a seriously talented up-and-comer so her work on any track is notable. This is one to put on your office playlist, your cooking playlist, your studying playlist, it works on pretty much every platform.

Freddie Metherell, ‘Man Down’ by Shakka and AlunaGeorge

I have to admit, I’ve been a little slow on the uptake in regard to this wave of London hip hop varieties that have swamped the charts recently. Fortunately for me, with his collaboration with AlunaGeorge, Shakka’s irresistible vocals have become far more accessible to a backwards fella like me. Summer vibes aplenty, ‘Man Down’ makes it desperately hard not to burst into a one-two step. With the additional production team encompassing J Hus, it’s not surprising that it is rife with catchy pop hooks. I think I will be taking this one with me through 2018.
